Our Mission is to develop programs to assist low-income, single-parent households and households in which grandparents are raising their grandchildren. Community First understands the challenges of those families, and their concerns for their children's well-being, safety and education. We will do everything possible to (1) help children at-risk gain self-confidence and academic skills leading to successful adult lives, (2) provide for at-risk children and youth by assisting their parents or guardians to work and provide for their families’ financial well-being and (3) arrange other supports necessary to protect the safety and well-being of those families.

Federal laws prohibit discrimination on grounds of race, sex, age, religion, national origin, and mental or physical handicap. In accordance with those requirements, Community First, Inc. hereby makes notice that it does not discriminate in admission or access to, treatment or employment, in any activities, including recruiting, hiring, compensation, job classification, promotion, and termination.
We’re a Resource for Single Parents and Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
We are your neighbors and we care about you and your children. We believe that it "takes a village to raise a child," or in our case, it takes a community. Your children are our children, the community's children, and we all need to work together to help them to grow into responsible, successful young adults. We believe in neighbors helping neighbors.
Many of our neighbors raising children are single parents or grandparents raising their grandchildren. As parents ourselves, we know how difficult it is to properly care for a child and recognize that parenting a child alone or as an older person on a limited income can be overwhelming. We want you to know you are not alone. We're here for you - to help you, to care about you and your family. We promise to do all we can to support you in your efforts to raise your children, the children of our community.
We will do all we can to help you at the Community First office at 1215 May River Road in Bluffton; however, if you need something beyond our abilities to provide, we've researched and developed a database of services offered by other agencies. Having laid the groundwork with those agencies, we can assist you in getting the services you need. Helping you provide a safe, nurturing environment for your family is our number one priority. Let us help you shoulder your load. After all, that's what good neighbors do! Remember...
After Family, It's Community First
Who We Are
Community First began in 2003 with a group of people dedicated to providing for the needs of those who are not able to provide for themselves in Beaufort and Jasper Counties. On April 6, 2006, Community First received tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) status. We formed a board of directors; there are five directors at the present time, and we are looking for additional dedicated board members.
Building on Hillary Clinton’s book title, “It Takes a Village” (to raise a child), we believe children need a caring community to help shape them into responsible young adults. A family’s first resource is the community. Using a philosophy of neighbor helping neighbor, we hope to promote a sense of belonging and a pride in being a member of a nurturing community. After family, it’s Community First.
In February, Community First opened a new office at 1215 May River Road in Bluffton, South Carolina. With the help of community members and volunteers, the building and grounds are ready for occupancy. Donations of good-condition toys, office furniture and equipment, landscaping, kitchen equipment, and school and/or office supplies would be greatly appreciated. Those interested in volunteering services or just curious about the program are welcome to drop by and introduce themselves.
